Today I am giving you a handy list of all such protective foods that actually safeguard our teeth from decay. Here it is: Fresh fruits, vegetables, low sugar cereals with milk, yogurt, cheese, nuts, sugar-free juice, peanut butter, whole grain breads and pasta and popcorn. Keep in mind to avoid those foods that you are intolerant to such as nuts. Also, some of these food items like popcorn are not suitable for infants up to 2 years old as they cannot chew them properly.

Be an Alert Dental Patient!

When our teeth are in trouble, the dentist seems like god to us. Even though this is true, there are emergencies like a severe toothache when you cannot visit your regular dentist when out of town.

So if ever you need to go to a new dentist, ensure that he washes his hands before and after wearing gloves. He must wear a mask on his face too, as this helps in reducing any kind of infection. In case you need anesthesia, check out if he is using disposable syringes for the same.

Teach your kids about this too and make them alert patients!

Do I Need a Mouthwash?

If you are someone who likes fresh smelling breath and wants to fight bacteria in the mouth, a mouthwash is something that must be in your bathroom.

A mouthwash should be used twice each day whenever you brush and floss your teeth. It helps to clean those difficult areas in your mouth where a brush cannot. Remember to go for an alcohol-free mouthwash as it will not sting and burn your tongue. If it contains alcohol, it dries up your mouth and gives you bad breath.

To avoid a dry mouth, drink lots of water everyday and help the saliva to work at its best!

Your Teeth Are What You Eat

A balanced diet is very important in maintaining the overall health and your teeth too. Sticky and sugary foods lodge themselves in the grooves of your teeth and are difficult to clean up. They are not rich in fiber and hence are not digested easily.

You need to include calcium rich foods such as milk and eggs in your diet to ensure your teeth get all the nutrients required. Very soft and mashed food is fine for little babies, but you should stay away from it as much as possible.

When I was young, my uncle used to tease me saying I will lose my intelligence when I extract my wisdom tooth…and the funny part is that I used to believe it!

Jokes apart, wisdom teeth erupt after the age of 12 till you reach 20 and it differs for all people. If your mouth is not large enough to accommodate these third molars, they have to be extracted. It is better to visit a dentist and know his opinion about this in your case since all of us are unique, and what is applicable to my teeth might not be suitable for you.

How to Floss Right

Flossing is indeed useful for reaching the difficult spaces between your teeth. It works very well when it is included as a part of your daily oral care regime. But the way you do it has to be correct.

To begin with, you will need about 18 inches of dental floss so that it is enough for all the teeth. Always work the floss taking one tooth at a time. This will scrape off plaque conveniently. There are wax varieties available that are easy to pull through your teeth which can be used too.

Have you come across any other flossing tricks?

There are certain tooth conditions that require you to pay a visit to your dentist other than the usual check-up routine.

If you encounter red, tender or swollen gums you need to visit the dentist. Other symptoms such as bleeding gums, loose teeth or gums that pull away from your teeth might suggest oral health issues. Certain people also develop sensitivity to hot or cold foods.

So it is better to rush to the dentist at these instances to prevent further tooth damage. These danger signals should not be ignored as you may end up loosing your teeth to them!

Don’t Harm Your Teeth While Cleaning

A toothbrush is the tool we all use for cleaning our teeth. Did you know that something as simple as a toothpick can also hurt your teeth?

Yes, that is true. When you use finger nails or pointed objects such as pins for removing something stuck in your mouth, you are inviting trouble. These objects can lead to bleeding gums if not used properly.

Always visit a dentist for regular cleaning of teeth and use floss for removing those miniscule food particles stuck in your mouth. Save your teeth from trouble!

After all, they are going to be with you till the end!
